The writing and design of this issue took place during an unprecedented period.

The pandemic we are still facing has disrupted every aspect of our existence, both in everyday life and in global social and economic terms. Almost every sector has raised the issue of the need for a paradigm shift that will not only cope with immediate tasks, but also respond to the critical issues highlighted by the emergency, which has exacerbated and accelerated systemic unsustainability in so many ways.

Against this backdrop, the theme of “saving”, which we had already decided on before the recent turn of events, seemed more appropriate than ever. At the same time, it took on new meanings in ecological and eschatological terms. Ecological in the proper sense of the term – in the sense of new design and production methods for environmental sustainability – but also as an invitation to reuse signs, to critically re-evaluate and re-signify them; eschatological in that it derives from a question of what to save from the uninterrupted flow of visual materials produced daily, from historical models and examples, and from technologies that are now obsolete. What to save for the subject area, but also what to save for us: what do we really need? Asking what to save also means asking how to save ourselves as designers. Because design, which in a less specific and technical way can be understood as the intention to do or make something, necessarily combines past and future, this question becomes eminently pragmatic. It is in the present, project by project, sign by sign, that we decide how to mediate between these two dimensions, between continuity and rupture.
